Japanese map of the southwest Pacific and Southeast Asia (1944).
This map illustrates those areas of Asia and the Pacific that France sought to annex in the second half of the nineteenth century. Apart from a period of Japanese occupation during the Second World War, Vietnam remained a French colony until the Vietnamese victory at Dien Bien Phu – a remote valley in the country's north, near the Laotian border – in 1954.
